On leaving School he was intending to go up to Cambridge, but in October 1914, he obtained a commission in the 7th Lancaster Regiment. He went out to France in July 1915 and took part in all the principal battles on the Somme in 1916. He was also present at the taking of the Messines Ridge. In 1916 he was Mentioned in Despatches, and in 1917 was awarded the Military Cross “for conspicuous gallantry in action and devotion to duty.”
He transferred to the R.F.C. in October 1917, and went to the front as an observer in January 1918. He was killed in action whilst on patrol.
