Today is the 100th anniversary of the first use of tanks.

While not successful at first, the fear generated by these lumbering beasts was as important as their battlefield worth.

It is the development of these machines, reaching a WW1 zenith possibly at Le Hamel, the first time what we may call ‘combined ops’ was seen on the battlefield, and then to the great tank battles of WW2, that is important. So, today is a day that saw the beginning in some ways of the 20th Century.
